| Magic--that's
what painting and drawing is--true magic. Take a white sheet of
paper, wave a pencil or brush over it long enough, and abra cadabra, the white paper becomes a person, or a
landscape, or a glider. Each time I finish
a painting I feel like a wizard. I first picked up a paint brush after earning a masters of fine arts degree in conceptual and performance art. In painting I found my medium. For the last 27 years I have painted what I cared most about, what I yearned to see most deeply. In Japan I taught English as a second language, hiked the Noto Penninsula, and painted. Atop mountain peaks and in the stream beds fed by the glacial run off, I painted. While canoeing with my Alaskan malaumute in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, I painted. I painted the women I loved, the people I admired, and those who had a story worth remembering. I did not realize it as I painted, but I was painting my life story. My paintings are in the collections of five museums in America and Europe, including the Smithsonian Institution. My painting and drawings are for sale, I welcome commissions, and I have prints for sale (click the Prints link at the bottom of the screen).
